Origins and Ownership
Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia created the initial concept of AirBed & Breakfast during the Industrial Design Conference held by Industrial Designers Society of America. The site offered short-term living quarters, breakfast and a unique business networking opportunity for attendees who were unable to book a hotel in the saturated market. The idea initialized when Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia came to a point where they could not afford to pay their loft in San Francisco; so they made their living room into a bed and breakfast, accommodating three guests on three air mattresses and providing homemade breakfast. Thus, the birth of AirBed & Breakfast. The official launched of the AirBed & Breakfast website was established on August 11, 2008.
And then later on, by the year 2009, Airbenandbreakfast.com was shortened to Airbnb.com, in addition to the website’s new name comes an expansion to the website’s content; from airbeds and shared spaces to a variety of properties including: entire homes and appartments, provate rooms, castles(yes! castles!), boats, manors, tree houses, tipis, igloos, private islands and other properties.

“Well, I have an update about my experience. It took several days to hear back from AirBnB customer service but they reviewed and did grant a significant refund and a travel credit good for a year. This pretty much equates to what we would have lost if no action had been taken by them. I am pleased with their response and feel it’s only right to alter my criticism of the previous reveiw. Thanks AirBnB”

“I’ve leased a place on Airbnb and was unaware of negative reviews until just now. I’ll be making that trip to Toronto in a couple weeks so who knows – may be singing a different tune when I return. I can only say that my experiences have been amazing with 2 different hosts. In 2014, a friend and I rented a loft in Toronto’s Art District for several days. A couple vacationing in Europe were the owners. The place was immaculate, everything was just as pictured and they were quite responsive when texted. I couldn’t have felt more comfortable. In 2015, I rented a home in the Vancouver, WA area for several days with my 2 sons and daughter-in-law. Once again, it was an incredible experience and I plan to rent, again, from this host in the future. I’m not sure why others are having issues or how to avoid them but will continue reading reviews.”
