Virgin Australia Airlines, formerly Virgin Blue Airlines, is Australia’s second largest airline after Qantas. It is the largest airline by fleet to use the Virgin brand. Virgin Australia has grown to directly serve 29 cities in Australia from hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, using a fleet of narrow-body Boeing and Embraer jets, and airbus and Boeing wider jets. With a huge fleet size of 124 offering services to 54 destinations, Virgin Australia offers a smooth, convenient and luxurious flight of a lifetime.

Origins and Ownership

John Borghetti CEO

Virgin Australia was co-founded by British businessman Richard Branson, the parent of Virgin Group and former Virgin Blue CEO Brett Godfrey. It was established in November 1999, with two aircrafts operating on a single route, and suddenly found itself catapulted to the position of Australia’s second airline after the collapse of Ansett Australia in September 2001.

Mr. John Massimo Borghetti has been the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Virgin Australia Holding Limited since May 8, 2010. Mr. Borghetti also served as an Executive General Manager of Qantas Airlines and Qantas Airways Limited from July 2008 to May 2009 and served as its Executive General Manager Sales & Marketing. Mr. John Borghetti became Virgin Australia’s CEO as Brett Godfrey stepped down as Virgin Blue’s CEO after steering the company through its first ten years, In May 2010.
